(*) Direction: From 275 take 96 East exit to Levan, Madonna U.; turn left onto Levan, pass Schoolcraft, watch for
sign to Kresge Hall. Background Information: During WWII in Asia, untold thousands of women, so-called comfort
women, were systematically rounded up, by false promise of factory or other work or by blatant kidnapping, and imprisoned
in comfort stations, i.e., Japanese army-run brothels, where they were daily raped Japanese military personnel. They totaled
more than two hundred thousands, comprising Burmese, Chinese, Dutch, Filipino, Indonesian, Korean, Taiwanese and Vietnamese
teenagers and young women. An unknown number committed suicide or perished due to V. D. or torture following attempted escape.
The redress for the comfort women has been an issue of deep concern for us all, while violence against women in armed
conflict continues, e. g., in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia. We have thus planned to hold a symposium on this issue of
gross violation of international law and human rights and invited Ms. Wang Ching Feng, Esq. to deliver the keynote speech.
Attorney Wang has served as the vice-minister of the supervisory branch of the government of Republic of China---ROC adopted
a system of five, instead of the common three, branches of government, the fifth branch being the examination yuan. Attorney
Wang also has helped found the Taipei Womens Rescue Foundation to help the surviving comfort women there, and seek justice
for them jointly with other pro bono attorneys on behalf of former comfort women in other countries. Please come
and bring your friends along to join others interested in preventing violence against women in armed conflict and in seeking
closure and redress for those WW II victims. (MHSWWII Symposium 2001 Committee)
